How Often Should I Redesign My Website?

Designing a website is a big undertaking. From getting the right graphics and colors to visually express your business to writing a ton of copy to educate your potential customers, building a website is no small feat! Once you’ve launched your new website, you’re probably eager to sit back and not do that again for a while. But the reality is you will need to update your website, and redesign it, on a fairly regular basis.

Why do I need to update my website?

Your business is not a static entity, and your website should follow suit. Things are always changing – your prices, your opening hours, the way you do business. If you do not update your website with new and relevant information, your website no longer provides the service of educating your customers.
If the information on your business website is incorrect, you’ve rendered it useless.
Updating your website regularly with new text, images, and video is also good for search engine optimization (SEO). If a website sits dormant for a few years, search engines like Google will assume you are no longer in business and your website will drop in the search results.

How Often Should I Update My Website?

As a general rule, we recommend our clients add something new to the website at least once a month. This is usually done with a blog post, but it could be anything like updating images or changing the copy a bit.
At the bare minimum, ensure your pricing, operating hours, contact details (phone number, email address, mailing address) and business branding are up-to-date.
It’s good practice to thoroughly review the content on your website once a year to correct mistakes or update outdated material.

How Often Should I Build a New Website?

Online research shows that most businesses redesign their website completely every 2 to 3 years.
Why so often? Well, similar to what’s written above, your business goals change often, and so your website should, too. For example, you might want to refocus your business or add a new product line.
But beyond business changes, it’s essential you redesign your website every 2 to 3 years to keep up with the pace of technology.
Remember when you could only access the internet from your computer? Now over 60% of internet traffic is from people on mobile devices. If you have a website that works well only on a desktop or laptop, you are creating an unpleasant experience for 60% of your website visitors.
A mobile friendly website is now essential, not optional.
Just like you frequently have to update the OS on your phone, you have to consider building a new website every few years to make sure it complies with internet security and usability.

Consider using a content management system

Technology has not only changed for the website user, but also for the website owner. If you don’t already have a website built on a content management system – where you can make text and image changes easily yourself – now is the time to look into making that change.
Popular content management systems like WordPress help you keep pace with the speed of technology by rolling out updates for their themes and plugins on a regular basis, and providing mobile versions of your website.
